Our Commitment
Port St. Lucie Weather Center is committed to making weather information accessible to the widest possible audience, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, or other assistive technologies. Accessibility matters most during severe weather, when everyone needs clear, reliable information quickly.
Standard We Aim For
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities.
What We Have Done
- Semantic structure: pages use meaningful headings, landmarks, and lists so assistive technology can navigate them.
- Keyboard access: navigation, menus, and interactive controls (including the “tap to load” map buttons) can be operated with a keyboard, and focus is visible.
- Reduced motion: if your device is set to “reduce motion,” we turn off the scrolling ticker, the radar sweep, and other decorative animation.
- Readable radar: the live radar embed is paired with a text summary of current conditions, so the current numbers are still available if the interactive map cannot load. The radar picture behind the embed is a stored reference image rather than live radar, and it is labelled that way on the page; for radar during a storm, use the National Weather Service radar link.
- Text alternatives: meaningful images include descriptive alternative text; purely decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology.
- Color and contrast: we target sufficient contrast between text and its background, and we do not rely on color alone to convey meaning.
- Responsive design: layouts adapt to phones, tablets, and desktops, and text can be resized without breaking the page.
Known Limitations
Some content on this Site comes from third parties whose accessibility we do not control, most notably the interactive Windy.com radar and map embeds. These widgets may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA. Where practical, we provide static images, text summaries, and links to official National Weather Service resources as accessible alternatives.
Ongoing Effort
Accessibility is an ongoing process, not a one-time task. We review the Site as we make changes and work to fix issues as we find them or as they are reported to us.
